Brief Description of the Project

Preface

The student body of the Diplomatic Academy - a veritable mosaic of people from all over the world - has developed the idea of organising a discussion forum to deal with the pertinent issue of nuclear proliferation. The 2010 edition of our traditional annual conference aims at effectively contributing to the public discourse, drawing public attention to the issue, by mobilising a number of experts in the field, and posing pertinent suggestions for decision makers in regards to the topic of nuclear proliferation.

Probably the most common illustration of man’s potential for mighty discoveries and accomplishments, on an epically tragic course, is the mushroom cloud. Undoubtedly, nuclear proliferation remains an issue of utmost importance to mankind. In the year of 2010, the fusion that gave politicians and strategists the chance to design the mutually assured destruction doctrine gives rise to a different set of opportunities, challenges and threats. It is this complex set that the conference will devote its full attention to.

We aim to do so by laying down the principal clusters of arguments in a broader forum for expert discussions, and subsequently breaking down into three more narrowly-themed panels:

  1. Environmental Dimension of Nuclear Proliferation
  2. Recent Cases and Issues of Nuclear Proliferation
  3. Nuclear Disarmament

Underpinning the charitable mission of DASI and its events, the proceedings from the conference’s entry fee shall be donated to PAVEL, a DASI supported charity project for cancer-suffering children in Romania.
